Walking on Pins? How to Permanently Clear Stubborn Plantar Warts

Feel like you're walking on pins? A stubborn plantar wart could be the culprit. Read on to learn why some plantar warts refuse to go away and how professional treatment can help eliminate them for good.

At first, you may not even notice a plantar wart, especially if it’s not on a weight-bearing part of your foot. Then one day, every step feels like you're walking on a pebble or worse, a pin.

Plantar warts can be surprisingly painful, especially when they develop on weight-bearing areas of your foot. While over-the-counter treatments work for some people, stubborn warts often require professional treatment to fully eliminate the virus and prevent the wart from coming right back.

If your wart makes it feel like you’re constantly walking on thumbtacks, come visit board-certified podiatrist Gaston Mike Liu, DPM, in Commack, New York.

What’s causing your plantar warts?

Before you explore treatment options, let’s first review what causes warts. Plantar warts are small growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Most plantar warts are caused by either HPV types 1, 2, 3, 4, 27, or 57.

The virus enters through tiny breaks in your skin and triggers excessive cell growth on the soles of your feet. Unlike warts that appear elsewhere on your body, plantar warts often grow inward because of the pressure placed on your feet when you stand.

You may have a higher risk of developing a wart if you walk barefoot in shared community spaces, such as locker rooms or pools.

Why won't my plantar wart go away?

If you’ve tried to get rid of a plantar wart before, you already know how stubborn they can be. Treating the wart you can see doesn’t always eliminate the virus beneath the surface, and many store-bought remedies simply aren’t strong enough to fully eradicate the wart.

To make matters worse, the virus can linger on items such as shoes, socks, and bathroom surfaces and increase your risk of reinfection.

That’s why temporary improvements are often followed by an unwelcome comeback.

How to permanently remove stubborn plantar warts

To get rid of your plantar warts and reduce the risk of them coming back, keep these strategies in mind:

Practice good foot hygiene

Because plantar warts are caused by a virus, preventing viral spread (and reinfection) is an important part of your initial treatment.

Wash your feet daily, change your socks regularly, and avoid sharing shoes, socks, nail clippers, or towels with others.

If you use communal showers, locker rooms, or pool areas, wear sandals or shower shoes whenever possible. It’s also a good idea to disinfect surfaces and footwear that may have come into contact with the wart.

Avoid picking or shaving the wart

It can be tempting to pick at a plantar wart, trim away dead skin, or try aggressive DIY treatments. Unfortunately, doing so can irritate the area and potentially spread the virus to other parts of your foot.

If you're using an over-the-counter treatment, follow the directions carefully and avoid cutting into the wart yourself. When in doubt, let a professional like Dr. Liu examine it. He can confirm that you’re dealing with a wart, not another foot condition. A neuroma can also feel like you’re walking on a pebble.

That said, if you have diabetes, think twice before attempting to treat a plantar wart at home. Because diabetes can affect circulation, sensation, and wound healing in the feet, even minor injuries can sometimes lead to more serious problems.

Address it sooner rather than later

Many people assume a plantar wart will eventually disappear on its own. While that sometimes happens, stubborn warts can persist for months or even years. During that time, they may become larger, more painful, or spread into clusters known as mosaic warts.

Seeking treatment (instead of brushing off symptoms) as soon as you spot the first sign of a wart often makes the wart easier to treat and may help prevent it from spreading.

Get professional help

When home treatments fail, professional care at our Commack, New York, location can often deliver faster, more effective results.

Many people assume plantar warts must be cut out, but that’s not always the case. Dr. Liu uses a specialized combination of medications that are applied directly to your wart and carefully padded to allow the treatment time to work.

With each visit, your wart gradually softens and loosens until it eventually falls away on its own. Best of all, this nonsurgical approach doesn't require any needles, anesthesia, or stitches, and it leaves no scar.

Don’t keep walking in pain

If every step reminds you that your wart is still there, it may be time to explore more effective treatment options with Dr. Liu.
